Sunday, May 1, 2022 - GOD’S RULE FOR CIVILITY

"I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen." (Luther's Morning Prayer)

Day 121 - (Today’s Bible readings: Proverbs 11:16-31; Psalm 112; Hebrews 12:18-29)

GOD’S RULE FOR CIVILITY

“Whoever belittles his neighbor lacks sense, but a man of understanding remains silent. Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets, but he who is trustworthy in spirit keeps a thing covered.” (Proverbs 11:12-13 ESV)

In the catechism’s explanation of the Eighth Commandment, we are encouraged to “defend our neighbor, speak well of him, and explain everything in the kindest way.”

How are you doing in this area?

Can others trust you to keep a confidence?

This certainly is not the way of the world around.

● Politicians are constantly belittling those of the opposite party.

● The news is constantly focusing on the negative.

● Children are still tattling on each other.

● We rush to judgement without fully knowing the facts.

● People don’t want to take the time to listen to someone else’s opinion, choosing instead to cancel them out.

● We prefer to judge rather than look for the good in ideas that may be different than ours.

● Even in the church, we often do not “explain everything in the kindest way,” and run rough shod over each other.

This old quote gives us some advice in combating loose tongues:

"If your lips would keep from slips,
Five things observe with care:
Of whom you speak, to whom you speak,
And how, and when, and where."
--from the 19th Century book THE RULES OF CIVILITY

The Bible gives us more clear Godly advice:

“Brothers (and sisters), do not slander one another.” James 4:11

“Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned.” Luke 6:37

“Love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” 1 Corinthians 13:7

May the Lord bless our efforts to look for the good instead of cancelling someone who’s opinion seems to be different.

Lord, please forgive me for the times my words have hurt others. Help me to choose my words wisely, to put the best construction on everything, and to keep my mouth shut when You want me to.  In Jesus’ saving name. Amen.

“See” you in church this morning!
(I will be preaching at Benediction Lutheran Church in Milwaukee this morning. Please pray that their Pastor, Rev. Don Hougard, has a negative Covid test this week so that he can finally return home from Germany!)

Saturday, April 30, 2022 - WHOLE HEARTED DEVOTION

"I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen." (Luther's Morning Prayer)

Day 120 - (Today’s Bible readings: Proverbs 11:1-15; Psalm 111; Hebrews 12:7-17)

WHOLE HEARTED DEVOTION
Praise the Lord! I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation. (Psalm 111:1 ESV)

The whole hearted devotion to the Lord that David is calling for is a common theme of the Bible. Here are some examples”

“And you, Solomon my son, know the God of your father and serve him with a whole heart and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches all hearts and understands every plan and thought. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will cast you off forever.” (1 Chronicles 28:9 ESV)

I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds. (Psalm 9:1 ESV)

Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart. (Psalm 119:2 ESV)

With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. (Psalm 119:10-11 ESV)

With my whole heart I cry; answer me, O Lord! I will keep your statutes. (Psalm 119:145 ESV)

I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart; before the gods I sing your praise. (Psalm 138:1 ESV)

Lord, Thee I love with all my heart;
I pray Thee, ne’er from me depart,
With tender mercy cheer me.
Earth has no pleasure I would share.
Yea, heav’n itself were void and bare
If Thou, Lord, wert not near me.
And should my heart for sorrow break,
My trust in Thee can nothing shake.
Thou art the portion I have sought;
Thy precious blood my soul has bought.
Lord Jesus Christ, my God and Lord, my God and Lord,
Forsake me not! I trust Thy Word. Amen.

Friday, April 29, 2022 - SEEK GOOD / SEEK GOD

"I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen." (Luther's Morning Prayer)

Day 119 - (Today’s Bible readings: Proverbs 10:1-17; Psalm 109; Hebrews 11:29-40)
SEEK GOOD / SEEK GOD

“Seek good, and not evil, that you may live; and so the Lord, the God of hosts, will be with you.” (Amos 5:14 ESV)

Amos was warning the Israelites against trusting in their material wealth, and even considering this to mean that they were good with God. People today make the same mistake, interpreting their material prosperity as a sign that they need not humble themselves and turn to God.

We face choices all day long. The are good choices and there are poor choices. The worst choices are the ones that are not godly, that go against God’s holy will, and lead away from Him.

Amos told the people to seek good so that the Lord would be with them.

So, seek good by seeking God.

● Open your Bible.
● Take a look at your Catechism.
● Take Sunday’s sermon to heart.
● Think about the words of the hymns you get to sing in church.

IN SHORT
● Seek God and His plan for you.

Heavenly Father, grant me the wisdom to seek You by taking time to meditate on Your Word and Your goodness. In Jesus’ saving name. Amen.

Thursday, April 28, 2022 - CHOOSE YOUR WORDS WISELY

"I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen." (Luther's Morning Prayer)

Day 118 - (Today’s Bible readings: Proverbs 10:1-17; Psalm 109; Hebrews 11:29-40)

CHOOSE YOUR WORDS WISELY

“The wise heart will receive commands, but a babbling fool will come to ruin.” (Proverbs 10:8 ESV)

“The words we speak can be either a source of life and comfort, edifying those around us, or a source of strife and wickedness, stirring up hatred and division. Always choose your words prudently, being careful never to speak gossip, lies, or slander about another person. Defend those whose reputation is under assault and forgive those who sin against you. Jesus was a victim of false accusations; the blood He shed on the cross covers all our offenses.” (The Lutheran Study Bible, Concordia Publishing House, 2009, page 1017)

Luther’s Small Catechism puts it this way:

The Eighth Commandment    You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
What does this mean?    We should fear and love God so that we do not tell lies about our neighbor, betray him,   slander him, or hurt his reputation, but defend him, speak well of him, and explain   everything in the kindest possible way (put the best construction on everything).

Lord, please forgive me for the times my words have hurt others. Help me to choose my words wisely and to put the best construction on everything. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Wednesday, April 27, 2022 - BEGINNING WITH WISDOM

"I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen." (Luther's Morning Prayer)

Day 117 - (Today’s Bible readings: Proverbs 9; Psalm 108; Hebrews 11:13-28)

BEGINNING WITH WISDOM

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.” (Proverbs 9:10 ESV)

If you don’t start out right, you won’t end up right. This is a true saying in almost every instance in life. When I was a boy, I loved to put model cars, planes and ships together. I had one problem, however. I did not like taking time to read the instructions. Often times I wound up with pieces left over!

When it comes to ending up right in the life, we need to start right. Sadly, too many people are not wise enough to get this. They think that they know what is best, what is wise for them.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” This does not mean merely to be afraid of God. It means respecting Him, honoring Him, and regarding what He says to be the truth.

“The knowledge of the Holy One is insight.” Knowing what God’s plan is for us truly gives us insight in to “what it is all about.”

● God demands that we keep His commands perfectly.
● If we commit even one sin, His justice requires our punishment.
● Because He still loves us, God the Father sent His Son, Jesus, to die in payment for our sins.
● All who believe in Jesus as their Savior from sin are forgiven those sins and promised eternal life in heaven.

Do you think it’s wise to trust in Jesus? Do you think that knowledge of the Holy One is the wisdom that poor, miserable sinners, like you and me, truly need?

Heavenly Father, please grant me true wisdom that comes from fearing and honoring You above all things. Holy Spirit, please continue to keep me in the one true faith by coming to me in God’s Word and Sacraments. In Jesus’ saving name. Amen.

Tuesday, April 26, 2022 - TELL EVERYONE WHAT GOD HAS DONE

"I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen." (Luther's Morning Prayer)

Day 116 - (Today’s Bible readings: Proverbs 8:22-36; Psalm 107; Hebrews 11:1-12)

TELL EVERYONE WHAT GOD HAS DONE

Let the redeemed of the Lord say so. (Psalm 107:2 ESV)

Why are you alive? What does the Lord expect of you? He has called those He has redeemed from sin, death and the devil to say so, to be His witnesses. May we joyfully tell everyone what He has done so they too may know the joy and peace that come from sins forgiven and heaven guaranteed.

Thank the Lord and sing His praise; tell ev'ryone what He has done.
Let all who seek the Lord rejoice and proudly bear His name.
He recalls His promises and leads His people forth in joy with shouts of thanksgiving.
Alleluia, alleluia.
(Divine Service One, The Lutheran Service Book, CPH 2006)

Lord Jesus, thank You for my salvation. May my life be filled with daily thanksgiving as I tell others of all that You have done. Please lead us forth in Your joy. Amen.

Monday, April 25, 2022 - SPUR ON ONE ANOTHER IN LOVE

"I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen." (Luther's Morning Prayer)

Day 115 - (Today’s Bible readings:  Prov. 8:1–21; Psalm 106; Heb. 10:32–39)

SPUR ON ONE ANOTHER IN LOVE

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good works.”   (Hebrews 10:24 NIV)

We have just celebrated the resurrection of Jesus and the fact that God has made us His own. Now in Hebrews 10 draws our attention to encouraging fellow Christians in responding to all that Christ has done for us.

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good works.” :

• We’re all in this together. We need each another.

• Be kind, not rude.

• Be aware of one another’s hot buttons and don’t push them.

Chose not to get upset with ideas that differ from yours.

• Build up one another often.

• Be open to suggestions. Realize that positive criticism can really help you grow.

• Look for the good in living for God with those around you.

• Have fun serving together.

• Don’t take yourself too seriously.

• Do take your relationship with others, especially fellow Christians, seriously.

• Spur one another on in serving the Lord together.

Lord Jesus, thank You for dying for me so that I can live with You forever. Please use me to spur other Christians around me to good works for You. I especially ask You to help me to not take myself too seriously by putting the feelings of others ahead of my own. In Jesus’ saving name. Amen.

Sunday, April 24, 2022 - ENCOURAGEMENT AND WORSHIP

"I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen." (Luther's Morning Prayer)

Day 114 - (Today’s Bible readings: Proverbs 7; Psalm 105; Hebrews 10:19-31)

ENCOURAGEMENT AND WORSHIP

“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” (Hebrews 10:24-25 ESV)

The writer to the Hebrews reminds that the Day is drawing near. Judgement Day is coming soon. His advice is that we spend our remaining time encouraging, or stirring up one another to love and good works.

Since love and good works flow from a close relationship with God, he calls us to “not neglect to meet together, as is the habit of some.” God comes to us in worship and strengthens our faith and prepares us for lives of faithful service.

As we worship, grant us vision,
Till Your love’s revealing light,
Till the height and depth and greatness
Dawns upon our quickened sight:
Making known the needs and burdens
Your compassion bids us bear,
Stirring us to faithful service,
Your abundant life to share.
(“Lord, Whose Love In Humble Service,” Lutheran Service Book #848)

Heavenly Father, may I find in the cross of my Savior the motivation to live a life of love and good works, all to Your glory. Please grant me a strong desire to meet with my brothers and sisters in Your house on a weekly basis, so that You can feed my soul with Your precious Word and Sacraments. As You encourage me, may I also encourage others. Amen.

Saturday, April 23, 2022 - BENEFIT # 1 FORGIVENESS

"I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen." (Luther's Morning Prayer)

Day 113 - (Today’s Bible readings: Proverbs 6:20-35; Psalm 104; Hebrews 10:11-18)

BENEFIT # 1 FORGIVENESS

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit...
He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;  as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. (Psalm 103:1-4, 10-12 ESV)

Do you notice that the list of divine benefits begins with forgiveness?

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity.”

Fellow repentant sinner, God has made you holy and fit for heaven.

“The blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” (1 John 1:7b)

Jesus paid for you sins on Good Friday. All of your sins are now gone, separated from you as far as the east is from the west. WHAT A WONDERFUL REASON TO BLESS AND THANK THE LORD!

Thank the Lord and sing His praise; tell ev'ryone what He has done.
Let all who seek the Lord rejoice and proudly bear His name.
He recalls His promises and leads His people forth in joy with shouts of thanksgiving.  Alleluia, alleluia.

Gracious heavenly Father, I do bless You holy name for all of Your benefits showered upon me every day. I thank you, above all, for not repaying me according to my iniquities. Please continue to sustain me with Your steadfast love.  In Jesus’ saving name. Amen.

“See” you in church tomorrow!

Thursday, April 21, 2022 - GOD HATES BAD CHOICES, BUT...

Day 111 - (Today’s Bible readings: Proverbs 6:1-19; Psalm 103; Hebrews 10:1-10)

GOD HATES BAD CHOICES, BUT...

“There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him; haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.” (Proverbs 6:16-19  ESV)

Look at this list of bad choices we find in our selection today from Proverbs.
   - haughty eyes,
   - a lying tongue,
   - hands that shed innocent blood,
   - a heart that devises wicked plans,
   - feet that make haste to run to evil,
   - a false witness who breathes out lies,
   - one who sows discord among brothers.”

Do you notice how these bad choices are all directed at others for the supposed benefit of self? But God hates them. And that is understandable, because God has called to love one another instead.

The problem is that we like putting ourselves first. No, not all of us lie, kill or stir up trouble between “brothers.” But we are sinners just the same.

This fact takes us back to the events of this past weekend - the death and resurrection of Jesus and this clear promise of hope.

“God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

Jesus is the good choice. Actually, “In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will.”  (Ephesians 1:5) God has chosen us.

Gracious heavenly Father, thank You for Your good and gracious choice of me to be one of Your precious children. Thank You for sending Jesus to pay for all of my bad choices. In the name of my Savior, Jesus.  Amen.

Thursday, April 21, 2022 - THE BLOOD OF JESUS - PRICELESS

"I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen." (Luther's Morning Prayer)

Day 111 - (Today’s Bible readings: Prov. 5; Psalm 102; Heb. 9:11–28)

THE BLOOD OF JESUS - PRICELESS

“Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.” (Hebrews 9:22 ESV)

The Old Testament sacrificial system that required the blood sacrifice of animals, pointed to shedding of Christ’s blood as a sacrifice for the sins of mankind. Do you understand what this means for you personally?

“The blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” (1 John 1:7b ESV)

 1. Not all the blood of beasts
On Jewish altars slain
Could give the guilty conscience peace
Or wash away the stain.

 2. But Christ, the heav'nly Lamb,
Takes all our sins away;
A sacrifice of nobler name
And richer blood than they.

 5. Believing, we rejoice
To see the curse remove;
We bless the Lamb with cheerful voice
And sing His bleeding love.
(Not All the Blood of Beasts, Lutheran Service Book, Concordia Publishing House, 2006, # 431)

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for shedding Your blood in payment for my sins. Bless my regular reception of Your body and Your blood in remembrance of Your sacrifice. Amen.

Wednesday, April 20, 2022 - KEEP FOCUSED ON JESUS

"I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen." (Luther's Morning Prayer)

Day 110 - (Today’s Bible readings: Prov. 4; Psalm 101; Heb. 9:1–10)

KEEP FOCUSED ON JESUS

“Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you... Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.” (Proverbs 4:25&27  ESV)

In the 4th chapter of Proverbs Solomon is giving advice for continuing in the right spiritual direction. “Focus on God and the things of God. It is not enough to have wisdom begun, it must be sustained.” (The Lutheran Study Bible, Concordia Publishing House, 2009, page 1006)

The writer to the Hebrews sharpens our focus by telling us to keep our eyes on Jesus.

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:2 NIV)

Gracious heavenly Father, please keep my eyes focused on Jesus and all that He did for me by dying on the cross. Amen

Keep your eyes on Jesus today!

Tuesday, April 19, 2022 - MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE

"I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen." (Luther's Morning Prayer)

Day 109 - (Today’s Bible readings: Prov. 3:19–35; Psalm 100; Heb. 8)

MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!  Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!
Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name!
For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations. (Psalm 100 ESV)

Sins forgiven...
Relationship with God restored...
Strength for today provided...
Heaven promised...

That is pretty impressive list of the treasures that are yours as a believer in Christ. May your response to these undeserved blessings reflect Psalm 100!

Gracious heavenly Father, please accept my joyful noise of praise and thanksgiving for all that You have freely bestowed upon me in Jesus. May my life reflect this in all that I do and say this day. In Jesus’ saving name. Amen.

Monday, April 18, 2022 - WHY?

"I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen." (Luther's Morning Prayer)

Day 108 - (Today’s Bible readings: Exodus 12:1-14; Psalm 116; 1 Corinthians 11:23-32; John 13:1-17)

WHY?

“What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” (John 13:7 ESV)

Life’s biggest question is “why.” There are many times in life when we cannot figure why certain things happen in our lives. Simon Peter could not understand why Jesus would want to wash his feet. Jesus’ answer was, in effect, just wait and see.

“What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” When you are faced with circumstances in your life that you cannot understand, remember Jesus’ words to Peter. While you may be grieving the loss of a loved one, or have come to realize that your dreams will not materialize, or whatever other heartaches and disappointments of life you may find yourself dealing with, remember that God is in control.

Benjamin Malachi Franklin’s poem, “The Weaver,” captures well how we Christians can deal with life’s “whys”:

My life is but a weaving between my Lord and me;
I cannot choose the colors He worketh steadily.

Oft times He weaveth sorrow and I, in foolish pride,
Forget He sees the upper, and I the under side.

Not till the loom is silent and the shuttles cease to fly,
Shall God unroll the canvass and explain the reason why.

The dark threads are as needful in the Weaver’s skillful hand,
As the threads of gold and silver in the pattern He has planned.

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your skillful hand weaving the varied strands in my life. Help me to face the “why” in my life with faith in Your perfect will. In Jesus’ saving name.  Amen.

Easter Sunday, April 17, 2022 - JESUS CHRIST RISEN TODAY

"I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen." (Luther's Morning Prayer)

Day 107 - (Today’s Bible readings:  Isaiah 65:17–25,  Psalm 16, 1 Cor. 15:19–26, Matthew 28:1-10)

JESUS CHRIST RISEN TODAY

But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay... Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”. (Matthew 28:5, 6 & 10 ESV)

Mighty Victor, reign forever.
Bear the crown so dearly won.
Never shall Your people never
Cease to sing what You have done.
You have fought Your people’s foes.
You have healed Your people’s woes. Hallelujah!  Amen.
(Easter prayer of the sainted Rev. Henry Tesch, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church Milwaukee / Menomonee Falls for over 3 decades.)

Look at how the Catechism explains the importance of this glorious day:

Why is Christ's resurrection so important and comforting?
Christ's resurrection proves that

  A. Christ is the Son of God;

  B. His doctrine is the truth;

  C. God the Father accepted Christ's sacrifice for the reconciliation of the world;

  D. All believers in Christ will rise to eternal life.

The Resurrection of our Savior truly fills our hearts with praise and thanksgiving!

Please click on this link and join in this triumphant Resurrection Sunday hymn of praise.

1. Jesus Christ is ris'n today, Alleluia!
    Our triumphant holy day, Alleluia!
Who did once upon the cross, Alleluia!
Suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia!

2. Hymns of praise then let us sing, Alleluia!
Unto Christ, our heav'nly king, Alleluia!
Who endured the cross and grave, Alleluia!
Sinners to redeem and save. Alleluia!

3. But the pains which He endured, Alleluia!
    Our salvation have procured; Alleluia!
Now above the sky He’s king, Alleluia!
Where the angels ever sing. Alleluia!

4. Sing we to our God above, Alleluia!
Praise eternal as His love; Alleluia!
Praise Him, all ye heav'nly host, Alleluia!
Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia!. Amen.

Saturday, April 16, 2022 - HOLY SATURDAY

"I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen." (Luther's Morning Prayer)

 Day 106 - (Today’s Bible readings: Proverbs 5; Psalm 102; Hebrews 8:11-28)

HOLY SATURDAY

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison. (1 Peter 3:18-19 ESV)

What did Jesus do on the first Holy Saturday? While we do not have a minute by minute account, we do have the words of Peter. He tells us that Jesus descended into hell.

Why did Jesus descend into hell? Some say that He had endure more suffering. However, when Jesus declared “It is finished,” he was proclaiming that His suffering was over, and that our sin is paid for.

Peter lets us in on this question. Jesus was put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison. In other words, Jesus descended into hell to proclaim His victory over Satan and death.

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for Your death on Calvary on my behalf. Thank You for defeating sin, death and the devil for me.  Amen.

“See” you in church tomorrow!

Friday, April 15, 2022 - GOOD FRIDAY WORDS FOR YOU

"I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen." (Luther's Morning Prayer)

Day 105 - (Today’s Bible readings: Isaiah 53; Psalm 22; Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:7-9; John 19:17-30)

GOOD FRIDAY WORDS FOR YOU

One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!” But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” (Luke 23:39-43 ESV)

Today is Good Friday, the day that the greatest victory of all time was won. When Jesus said, “It is finished,” He defeated our worst enemies of sin, death and the devil.

What does Good Friday mean for you personally? Because died in your place, paying for all of your sins, you will one day receive the same assurance Jesus gave the second criminal, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

Because you believe that Jesus died and rose for you, the best is yet to come. Heaven is yours for sure!

Jesus, pitying the sighs
Of the thief, who near you dies,
Promising him paradise:
Hear us, holy Jesus.  (LSB 447)

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for taking my place on the cross, forgiving my sins, and promising me heaven. Please keep me faithful so that I will be blessed with paradise on my last day. Amen.
