March 1, 2019 - LORD HAVE MERCY

Day 60 - (Today’s Bible readings: 1 Samuel 29; Psalm 58; Colossians 4:7-18 )

"Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by," (Psalm 57:1 ESV)

What is mercy? Mercy is God’s undeserved blessing showered upon repentant sinners. Peter described God’s mercy this way: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you.”  (1 Peter 1:3-4 ESV)

Believers in Christ have been given what we do not deserve, hope. We deserve to be hopeless, to have nothing to look forward to other than eternal damnation in hell. But, God the Father has been merciful to us.
● He sent Jesus to suffer the punishment we deserve.
● Jesus paid off your debt of sin.
● And now you have that living hope.
● Eternal life in heaven is yours for sure!
● Until then, God promises to lead and direct your life.

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your mercy shown me in Jesus, my Savior. Please use me to share Your mercy with others. Amen.

February 28, 2019 - KEEP LOOKING UP

Day 59 - (Today’s Bible readings: 1 Samuel 28; Psalm 57; Colossians 3:18-4:6)

“Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” (Colossians 3:2 ESV)

Paul is encouraging us to keep focused on Christ, to keep looking up. The writer to the Hebrews directs our focus upward as well: “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2 NIV)

And how does one go about “looking up?” Later in Colossians 3, Paul answers that question: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” (Colossians 3:16 ESV)

Heavenly Father, help me to set my mind on Jesus, my Savior. To this end, please grant me a hunger for Your Word and a desire to spend time reading the Bible. Amen.

February 27, 2019 - IN GOD I TRUST

Day 58 - (Today’s Bible readings: 1 Samuel 27; Psalm 56; Colossians 3:1–17)

“When I was afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid.”   (Psalm 56:3-4 ESV)

“Even in the midst of danger, David rejoices in God’s love and His certain deliverance from death.

When we face trials, we may be tempted to worry about our own welfare or feel like giving up in hopelessness.

Instead, we can remember that our problems are nothing new and that God is able to help in every situation.

Through these experiences, He strengthens our faith and draws us closer to Jesus, our Savior.” (The Lutheran Study Bible, Concordia Publishing House, 2009, page 901)

I am trusting Thee, Lord Jesus, never let me fall.
I am trusting Thee forever and for all.
(“I Am Trusting, Thee, Lord Jesus,” Lutheran Service Book, CPH 2006, #729)

Heavenly Father, please help me to trust You, especially during those times that make me doubt. May the Holy Spirit strengthen me to doubt my doubts and believe, believe, believe!  In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Trust in God today no matter what!

February 26, 2019 - LET ME HELP YOU WITH THAT - Jesus

Day 57 - (Today’s Bible readings: 1 Samuel 2:26; Psalm 55; Colossians 2:16-23)

Cast your burden on the Lord,
    and he will sustain you;
he will never permit
    the righteous to be moved. (Psalm 55:22)

What kind of burdens are you facing today? Heavy lifting can be very taxing. We all need help dealing with life’s challenges, especially the ones that make us fell like we are about to be crushed.

The Psalmist encourages us to cast those burdens on the Lord. He promises to help us in those times. The poplar poem captures the essences of this promise with this response to the frustration of feeling alone and abandoned.

The Lord replied, “My precious, precious child.
I love you, and I would never,never leave you
during your times of trial and suffering.
When you saw only one set of footprints,
It was then that I carried you.

The hymn writer also echos the divine burden bearing promise.

Are we weak and heavy laden,
Cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our Refuge -
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer;
In His arms He'll take and shield thee,
Thou wilt find a solace there.
(“What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” LSB 770)

Lord, please bless me and carry me through the challenges I will face today. Thank you so much for taking care of the burden of my sins on the cross. In Jesus’ saving name. Amen.

February 25, 2019 - DON’T BE DECEIVED

Day 56 - (Today’s Bible readings: 1 Samuel 25:23-44; Psalm 54; Colossians 2:6-15)

“See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.” (Colossians 2:8 ESV)

No one wants to be deceived. No one wants to be led in the wrong direction. That’s why Paul wrote these words. He is warning us about listening to the lies of Satan that come to us in the form of human opinion.

For us Christians, God’s Word is the guiding light that illuminates the truth of Christ Jesus: “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6 ESV)

Every other religious idea is law based and focuses on what man must attempt to do to make himself right with God. The only problem is that these other ideas lead to hell and not to heaven! Paul explained this to the church in Galatia with these words:

For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith...” Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree.” (Galatians 3:10-13)

So, faith in Jesus is our only hope for forgiveness and heaven! Are you trusting in Him?

I am trusting Thee, Lord Jesus,
Trusting only Thee;
Trusting Thee for full salvation,
Great and free.
(I Am Trusting Thee, Lord Jesus, LSB 729-1)

Heavenly Father, protect me from the deceptive thinking of this world. Please lead me in the way of truth through faith in Jesus my Savior. Amen.

February 24, 2019 - WE NEED OUR BEAUTIFUL SAVIOR

Day 55 - (Today’s Bible readings: 1 Samuel 25:1-22; Psalm 53; Colossians 1:24-25)

They have all fallen away;
    together they have become corrupt;
there is none who does good,
    not even one. (Psalm 53:3 ESV)

The question took me by surprise. “What do you call a sin?” The questioner didn’t believe that she was a sinner. Perhaps she was comparing herself to others. Whatever methods we may employ to minimize our sins, we can do nothing to minimize our passage for today. “There is none that does good, not even one.”

We desperately need help, which is precisely why Jesus came down to earth in the first place.

But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. (Galatians 4:4-5 ESV)

We are great sinners. And Jesus is our great Savior!

Beautiful Savior, Lord of the nations,
Son of God and Son of Man!
Glory and honor, Praise adoration
Now and forevermore be thine!
(Beautiful Savior, Lutheran Service Book # 537-4)

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for being the Savior of this sinner. Remind me daily of how important it is to repent and believe in You. Amen.

“See” you at the Communion rail this morning!

February 22, 2019 - GOOD FOR EVIL

Day 53 - (Today’s Bible readings: 1 Samuel 24; Psalm 52; Colossians 1:15-23)

He said to David, “You are more righteous than I, for you have repaid me good, whereas I have repaid you evil.” (1 Samuel 24:17 ESV)

David finds himself in the position to exact revenge on his tormentor, King Saul. However David does is not interested in pay back.

“Behold, this day your eyes have seen how the Lord gave you today into my hand in the cave. And some told me to kill you, but I spared you. I said, ‘I will not put out my hand against my lord, for he is the Lord's anointed.’” (1 Samuel 24:10 ESV)

An amazed Saul responds to David’s mercy and respect by saying, “You are more righteous than I, for you have repaid me good, whereas I have repaid you evil.”

The key to David’s honorable lack of returning evil with evil was his faith, trust and obedience directed to God. He knew what Peter would later write is absolutely true. Blessings do not flow from evil.

“Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing.” (1 Peter 3:9 ESV)

May you and I, as followers of Jesus, always respond to evil with His goodness!

Father in heaven, thank You for Your goodness and mercy showered upon me in spite of the evil ways I have treated you. As you have responded to my sin with the goodness of Jesus, so may I respond to evil done to me with Your love showered on me from His cross. In Jesus’ good and saving name. Amen.

“See” you in church tomorrow!

February 22, 2019 - THE HEART OF THE CHRISTIAN FAITH

Day 53 - (Today’s Bible readings: 1 Samuel 23:6-29; Psalm 51; Colossians 1:1-14)

Create in me a clean heart, O God,
    and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from your presence,
    and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
    and uphold me with a willing spirit. (Psalm 51:10-12 ESV)

The heart of the Christian faith is the gift of complete forgiveness showered freely upon all who repent and see God’s mercy.

John writes of God’s merciful promise this way:

“If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:8-9 ESV)

On Sunday morning, right after you confess your sins, you hear these soul-freeing words spoken on God’s behalf by your pastor:

Upon this your confession, I, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Thank You, Lord, for hearing my cry for mercy and for seeing my sincere confession. Your complete forgiveness of all of my sins is the greatest gift You could ever give. Please use me to share this treasure with others. In Jesus’ saving name. Amen.

February 21, 2019 - JUST GIVE ME A CALL

Day 52 - (Today’s Bible readings: 1 Samuel 22:6-23:5; Psalm 50; Philippians 4:2-23)

IF YOU NEED ANYTHING, JUST GIVE ME A CALL

Have you ever heard these words before?  Perhaps you shared them yourself. They are meant to show our care and concern for another person with some sort of need.  What comforting words God has for us sinners who so often find ourselves in trouble:

“Call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”   (Psalm 50:15 ESV)

Just think of it.  When you get in a jam, God Himself is on call for you! You don’t have to go through an endless series of phone prompts. You don’t have to be frustrated by being put on hold. God simply says: When the going gets rough, just give me a call.

Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged,
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a Friend so faithful
Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness -
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
(What A Friend We Have In Jesus, Lutheran Service Book, CPH, 2006, #770 vs 2)

Lord, I have many earthly needs that I bring before You today. Please grant them according to Your will. But I have far greater needs. Please grant the needs of my soul (forgiveness, peace, and heaven) as I repent of my sin and seek Your strength for the day. Amen.

February 20, 2019 - VICTORIOUS FAITH

Day 51 - (Today’s Bible readings: 1 Samuel 21:10-22:5; Psalm 49; Philippians 3:12-4:1)

“For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?" (1 John 5:4-5 ESV)

Most people have faith in something. However, it is the object of one’s faith that matters. Faith in a broken-down old car may get you nowhere. Faith in your physical strength may not prove trustworthy as you age. Faith in your finances may not see you through the next financial crash.

Only faith in Jesus, your Savior, lasts. Faith in Christ produces eternal victory over the disappointments, struggles and weariness of this world. Thanks be to God who gives you saving faith in His Son via His Means of Grace.

Thank You, heavenly Father, for blessing me with a victorious faith in Jesus. Thank You for the victory over sin, death and the devil that comes to me only through Jesus. Amen.

February 19, 2019 - FORTRESS ZION

Day 50 - (Today’s Bible readings: 1 Samuel 20:30-21:9; Psalm 48; Philippians 3:1-11)

Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised
    in the city of our God!
His holy mountain, beautiful in elevation,
    is the joy of all the earth,
Mount Zion, in the far north,
    the city of the great King.
Within her citadels God
    has made himself known as a fortress. (Psalm 48:1-3)

David is talking about the temple on Mt. Zion, the holy mountain, the source of joy for all the earth. We have a fortress Zion today.

Our fortress is the Christian Church where the focus is on Jesus’ sacrificial work of saving sin-ravaged mankind. Our churches are places where we receive God’s mercy and grace as He comes to us through the Means of Grace, God’s Word and the Sacraments of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. In short, when we gather together on Sunday, we get to meet Jesus and receive His gifts of forgiveness and heaven.

Within those halls of Zion
Sounds forth the joyful song,
As saints join with the angels
and all the martyr throng.
The Prince is ever with them;
The daylight is serene;
The city of the blessed
Shines bright with glorious sheen.
(“Jerusalem the Golden,Lutheran Service Book #672-2)

Heavenly Father, thank You for gathering me into Zion, Your strong fortress. Please use me to invite others to also meet Jesus in church this coming Sunday. In Jesus’ saving name. Amen.

February 18, 2019 - HIS PEOPLE - OUR GOD

Day 49 - (Today’s Bible readings: 1 Samuel 20:1-29; Psalm 47; Philippians 2:12-30)

“And I will give them one heart, and a new spirit I will put within them. . . And they shall be my people, and I will be their God.” (Ezekiel 11:19-20 ESV)

Ezekiel is given a vision of the just punishment God will render toward His unfaithful people. Yet God is planning to show mercy.  Do you remember David’s prayer?

Hide your face from my sins,
and blot out all my iniquities.
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from your presence,
and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and uphold me with a willing spirit.
(Psalm 51:9-12 ESV)

In Christ Jesus this prayer was answered for David and for us. His death on the cross has blotted out all of our sins and iniquities. The result is a clean heart and a right spirit. The second half of David’s prayer is for a renewed relationship with God. This we find answered directly by God’s declaration: “And they shall be my people, and I will be their God.”

Heavenly Father, thank You for answering my prayer for forgiveness and for a clean heart. I rejoice that, in spite of my sinful nature, I am still one of Your people and You are still my God. Amen.

February 17, 2019 - EVERY KNEE SHALL BOW

Day 48 - (Today’s Bible readings: 1 Samuel 19:8-24; Psalm 46; Philippians 2:1-11)

“And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:8-11 ESV)

Jesus is the King of kings and Lord of lords because He is the Son of God Who came in the flesh to save sinners from eternal death. Therefore, His name is to be honored by all people.

While Paul’s words direct us to the day when every single person will bow and confess Christ as Lord, we Christians willingly and gladly do so now. Every time we gather in our churches we confess that Jesus is our Savior, and we bow at the Communion rail as we receive His body and blood.

“Every knee shall bow...and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord” is also a warning call to those who are not believers. Unless they repent and believe in Jesus as their Savior, even though on Judgment Day they will acknowledge Jesus is Lord, it will be too late. “Now is the day of salvation.” (2 Corinthians 6:2 ESV)

Lord Jesus, I confess that You are my Lord and Savior. Kneeling before You at the Communion rail each week is a true blessing to my soul. Please have mercy on those who do not yet know You, and move Your people to witness to these lost ones before it is too late. Amen.

“See” you at the Communion rail this morning!

February 16, 2019 - GROW IN KNOWLEDGE AND DISCERNMENT

Day 47 - (Today’s Bible readings: 1 Samuel 18:17-19:7; Psalm 45; Philippians 1:12-30)

“And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ.” (Philippians 1:9-10 ESV)

Paul’s wants Christian love to grow in the lives of God’s people to such an extent that we will be able to distinguish between what is from God (that which is excellent) and what is from the devil. What can we do to grow in this manner? The answer is so simple. God wants us to read, mark, learn and inwardly digest His Word, the Bible.

The picture clearly reminds us that we grow in Christ by spending time in His Word. When we invest time in reading the Bible, our love for God and for people grows. The knowledge imparted to us from the sacred pages teaches us what is excellent and pure. It shows us Christ’s cross, our forgiveness, and our calling to live for Him.

Blessed Lord, You have caused all Holy Scriptures to be written for our learning. Grant that we may so hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them that, by patience and comfort of Your holy Word, we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

“See” you in church tomorrow!

February 15, 2019 - A MIGHTY FORTRESS IS OUR GOD

Day 45 - (Today’s Bible readings: 1 Samuel 18:1-16; Psalm 44; Philippians 1:1-11)

1 God is our refuge and strength,
    a very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
    though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam,
    though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah
4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
    the holy habitation of the Most High.
5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;
    God will help her when morning dawns.
6 The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;
    he utters his voice, the earth melts.
7 The Lord of hosts is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah
8 Come, behold the works of the Lord,
    how he has brought desolations on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
    he breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
    he burns the chariots with fire.
10 “Be still, and know that I am God.
    I will be exalted among the nations,
    I will be exalted in the earth!”
11 The Lord of hosts is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah  (Psalm 46 ESV)

Lord God, thank You for being my mighty fortress and my trusty shield and weapon. Please continue to protect this penitent sinner. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

February 14, 2019 - DELIVER US FROM EVIL

Day 45 - (Today’s Bible readings: 1 Samuel 17:38-58, Psalm 43, Ephesians 6:5-23)

“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.” (Ephesians 6:11-13 ESV)

“Deliver us from evil,” is the Seventh Petition of the Lord’s Prayer. Paul states the case for the necessity of such delivery. “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”

Our enemy, the devil, is scheming our destruction. But there is hope. God provides armor for our protection, as Paul outlines for us next:

the belt of truth
the breastplate of righteousness
put on (shoes) the gospel of peace.
the shield of faith, (extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one)
the helmet of salvation
the sword of the Spirit (the Word of God)

Gracious Lord, please protect me and all believers by means of Your armor. Remind me that the sword of the Spirit (Your Word) is designed for both defense and offense. In Jesus’ protecting name. Amen.

February 13, 2019 - THIRSTING FOR GOD

Day 44 - (Today’s Bible readings:1 Samuel 17:19-37, Psalm 42, Ephesians 5:22-6:4)

As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.  (Psalm 42:1-2 ESV)

What a wonderful gift God gave David! The repentant and forgiven sinner was given a deep desire to be as close to His Savior as possible.

Do you have a deep desire to be as close as possible to God? Read and meditate on His Word. Worship Him faithfully each week. Remember what Jesus did for you on Mt. Calvary.

Lord, thank You for my salvation. Like David, may I thirst for Your presence in my life. Amen.

February 12, 2019 - IMITATE GOD

Day 43 - (Today’s Bible readings:1 Samuel 17:1-19, Psalm 41, Ephesians 5:1-21)

“Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” (Ephesians 5:1-2 ESV)

The picture speaks volumes, reminding us that others may be looking to us as role models. Paul encourages us to follow the best role model of all, God Himself! He then gives us two examples of how this kind of imitation looks, one positive and one negative.

What God wants us to do: “And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”

What God does not want us to do: “But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.”  (Ephesians 5:3-4 ESV)

May we be positive role models as we walk in Christ-like love.

Almighty God, please forgive me for the many times that I fail to imitate You. May I walk in the love of Jesus and be a positive Christian witness to others. Amen.

February 11, 2019 - DON’T GO TO BED ANGRY

Day 42 - (Today’s Bible readings:1 Samuel 16, Psalm 40, Ephesians 4:17-32)

“Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil.” (Ephesians 4:26-27 ESV)

Paul is sharing with us one of the most difficult things to do, yet also one of the wisest. He is calling the child of God to let go of anger and forgive. The person you could choose to be angry with may not accept your apology, but you will be all the better for letting go. Besides, the One who has the right to be angry with you for all eternity sent His only Son to a cruel cross so that He could forgive you!

Paul’s words, which are actually God’s Words to and for you, can really help you and your family. When we don’t follow God’s plan, the devil is right there attempting to destroy all that we hold dear. For the sake of your family, your relationship with coworkers, your life at church, and your own inner peace, FORGIVE.

Yes, “as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.”  (Colossians 3:13 ESV)

Lord, please help me to forgive ________. Remind me constantly of what it cost You to forgive me, so that I will be ready to forgive others. Amen.

February 10, 2019 - LIFE TOGETHER

Day 41 - (Today’s Bible readings:1 Samuel 15, Psalm 39, Ephesians 4:1-16)

“There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call—one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.” (Ephesians 4:4-6 ESV)

The life God’s people live together is the focus of the verses above. It is also the focus of the Greek word “koinonia.”

● The oneness that we have as Christians is.

● Christian unity simply exists.

● Christian unity is not something we develop.

● Christian unity is a gift of God.

● Christian unity is our gift IN CHRIST.

There are numerous passages that declare this oneness IN CHRIST. This morning many of us will express our unity as we gather for worship with these words:

    I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.
   And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.  He descended into hell.  The third day He rose again from the dead.  He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.  From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
    I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen.

Lord, thank You for making us one IN CHRIST. Help us to practice that oneness in ways that bring glory to Your name and lost souls to their Savior. Amen.

Celebrate Christian oneness as you worship today!

“See” you at the Communion table this morning.
