Monday, January 6, 2025 -THE EPIPHANY OF OUR LORD

"I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen."

THE EPIPHANY OF OUR LORD

2 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5 They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:

6 “‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
    are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler
    who will shepherd my people Israel.’”

7 Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” 9 After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way. (Matthew 2:1-12)

Today we celebrate the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy of the birth of Christ and the coming of the wise men. According to the Bible, the magi (wise men) arrived in Bethlehem when Jesus was somewhere between 41 days and 2 years old. That’s why Matthew tells us that they went into the house and worshiped the baby Jesus. For some, this is surprising. As  interesting as the facts of the coming of the wise men are, the main point is that Jesus came for a world covered in the darkness of sin.

2 For behold, darkness shall cover the earth,
    and thick darkness the peoples;
but the Lord will arise upon you,
    and his glory will be se en upon you.  (Isaiah 60:2 ESV)

The birth of Jesus ushered in the saving light of the Gospel. Jesus put it this way:
“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12 ESV)

The wise men followed Jesus and were blessed with the light of the world. Are you following Him too?

1. As with gladness men of old
    Did the guiding star behold;
    As with joy they hailed its light,
    Leading onward, beaming bright;
    So, most gracious Lord, may we
    Evermore be led by Thee.

2. As with joyful steps they sped,
    Savior, to Thy lowly bed,
    There to bend the knee before
    Thee, whom heav'n and earth adore;
    So may we with willing feet
    Ever seek Thy mercy seat.

3.  As they offered gifts most rare
    At Thy cradle, rude and bare,
    So may we with holy joy,
    Pure and free from sin's alloy,
    All our costliest treasures bring,
    Christ, to Thee, our heav'nly King.

4.  Holy Jesus, ev'ry day
    Keep us in the narrow way;
    And when earthly things are past,
    Bring our ransomed souls at last
    Where they need no star to guide,
    Where no clouds Thy glory hide.

5.  In the heav'nly country bright
    Need they no created light;
    Thou its light, its joy, its crown,
    Thou its sun which goes not down;
    There forever may we sing
     Alleluias to our King.
    (Lutheran Service Book #397)

Lord Jesus, thank You for being the light of the world who came to enlighten all people with Your love and forgiveness. In response to Your mercy and grace in my life, may I walk in You light today and every day.   Amen.

May you and your loved ones remain BLESSED BY THE LORD in every way!

THE TWELFTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS

 On the twelfth day of Christmas
     my true love sent to me:

Twelve Drummers Drumming (12 points of the Apostles’ Creed)
Eleven Pipers Piping (11 Faithful Disciples)
Ten Lords a Leaping (10 Commandments)
 Nine Ladies Dancing (9 Fruits of the Spirit)
 Eight Maids a-Milking (8 Beatitudes)
 Seven Swans a-Swimming (7 Gifts of the Spirit)
  Six Geese a-Laying (Six days of Creation)
 Five Golden Rings (The Pentateuch...
       first 5 books of the Bible)
 Four Calling Birds (The 4 Gospels... Matthew,
      Mark, Luke and John)
 Three French Hens (The Holy Trinity...
     Father, Son and Holy Spirit)
 Two Turtle Doves (The Old and New Testaments)
and a Partridge in a Pear Tree. (JESUS and His death on the cross)
Why 12 Drummers Drumming on the Twelfth Day of Christmas?

The 12 drummers are said to represent twelve points of doctrine in the Apostles’ Creed.

• God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.
• Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord...
• Conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary...
• Suffered... was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell.
• He rose again from the dead.
• He ascended into heaven, sits at the right hand of God and will come to judge.
• The Holy Spirit.
• The holy Christian church.
• The communion of saints.
• The forgiveness of sins.
• The resurrection of the body.
• The life everlasting.

Almighty God, thank You for the Twelve Days of Christmas and the lessons about the Christian faith revealed each day. May my celebration of the incarnation of Christ continue throughout the entire year. Thank You, Jesus, for coming to this earth with the mission of saving sinners like me.  Amen.

“See” you at the Communion rail this morning

The Eleven Pipers Piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.

6) Bartholomew,
7) Matthew,

Dearest Lord Jesus, may I be faithful to You, just like the disciples. To this end, please give me a hunger to read and learn more from Your Word this year. Amen.

Friday, January 3, 2025 - Day 3 (Through the Bible in a year reading for today: Joshua 11:28-12:7; Psalm 3; Acts 16:11-24)

THE TENTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS

 On the tenth day of Christmas
     my true love sent to me:
Ten Lords a Leaping (10 Commandments)
 Nine Ladies Dancing (9 Fruits of the Spirit)
 Eight Maids a-Milking (8 Beatitudes)
 Seven Swans a-Swimming (7 Gifts of the Spirit)
  Six Geese a-Laying (Six days of Creation)

     Father, Son and Holy Spirit)
 Two Turtle Doves (The Old and New Testaments)
and a Partridge in a Pear Tree. (JESUS and His death on the cross)
The Ten Lords a Leaping represent the Ten Commandments.

 1. You shall have no other gods.

 2. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.

 3. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

 4. Honor your father and your mother.

 5. You shall not murder.

 6. You shall not commit adultery.

 7. You shall not steal.

 8. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

 9. You shall not covet your neighbor's house.

10. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant, or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.
(Luther's Small Catechism, Concordia Publishing House)

The Law of God is good and wise
And sets His will before our eyes,
Shows us the way of righteousness,
And dooms to death when we transgress.

Its light of holiness imparts
The knowledge of our sinful hearts
That we may see our lost estate
And seek escape before too late.

To those who help in Christ have found
And would in works of love abound
It shows what deeds are His delight
And should be done as good and right.

But those who scornfully disdain
God’s Law shall then in sin remain,
Its terror in their ear resounds
And keeps their wickedness in bounds.

The Law is good; but since the fall
Its holiness condemns us all;
It dooms us for our sin to die
And has no power to justify.

To Jesus we for refuge flee,
Who from the curse has set us free
And humbly worship at His throne,
Saved by His grace through faith alone.
(Lutheran Service Book #579)

Heavenly Father, thank You for the Ten Commandments that show me my sins, show me Your way, and protect me as well. Thank You even more for Jesus, Your Son and my Savior. Amen.

Have a blessed New Year!

Thursday, January 2, 2025 - THE NINTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS

"I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen." (Luther's Morning Prayer)

Thursday, January 2, 2025 - Day 2 (Through the Bible
in a year reading for today: Judges 11:1-27; Psalm 2; Acts 15:36-16:10)

THE NINTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS

 On the ninth day of Christmas
     my true love sent to me:
 Nine Ladies Dancing (9 Fruits of the Spirit)
 Eight Maids a-Milking (8 Beatitudes)
 Seven Swans a-Swimming (7 Gifts of the Spirit)
  Six Geese a-Laying (Six days of Creation)
 Five Golden Rings (The Pentateuch...
       first 5 books of the Bible)
 Four Calling Birds (The 4 Gospels... Matthew,
      Mark, Luke and John)
 Three French Hens (The Holy Trinity...
     Father, Son and Holy Spirit)
 Two Turtle Doves (The Old and New Testaments)
and a Partridge in a Pear Tree. (JESUS and His death on the cross)
Why ladies dancing on the Ninth Day of Christmas?

On this day we remember the nine fruits of the spirit found in Galatians 5:

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.   (Galatians 5:22-23)

This looks like a pretty good list of New Year’s resolutions. May you be blessed as you “work” at these by prayer, meditation on the Word, and by helping others in the name of the Lord. Above all, stay close to Jesus – repent and believe.

Dear Holy Spirit, please work in my life in this new year so that I may be blessed by the Lord. Please make my heart pure as I hunger and thirst after Your righteous ways. Above all, remind me of my sin and of my need for Jesus my Savior. Amen.
