March 26, 2017 - DON’T BE AFRAID, FISH

Day 85 - Joshua 16-18 & Luke 5:1-16

For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken... And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.  (Luke 5:9-11 ESV)

Simon and his fishing buddies had just experienced a frustrating and futile fishing trip. Jesus told them to “Put out in the deep and let down your nets.” They did as they were told, and soon their nets were full and breaking. They called to their friends in another boat, and soon both boats began to sink. Peter’s next words reveal that he got the message. ‘Depart from me, for I am a sinful man.”

Jesus then teaches us an important rule about witnessing to others.

“Do not be afraid...”

Do not be afraid! God has a job for you and me to do. We get to tell others about Him and His plan to forgive sinners and promise us heaven. Although our fearful human tendency is to not stand up for Him, we do have His promise:

“And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20 ESV)

So, do not be afraid, just fish. Just share the good news about Jesus whenever and with whomever you can.

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for my Baptism and the gift of saving faith You have bestowed upon me. Thank you also for calling me to fish for men, to share Your story with others who need You as desperately as I do. Please use me to reach more souls for You and for eternity. Amen.

“See” you at the Communion table this morning!
