November 13, 2018 - ANTIDOTE TO TEMPTATION

Day 317 - (Today’s Bible readings: Joshua 4; Psalm 119:41-48; Luke 12:1-12)

But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’” (Matthew 4:4,7,10 ESV)

While under protective custody in the Wartburg castle, Martin Luther found himself so frustrated with the temptations of the devil that he threw an ink well at him. On other occasions he used prayer, hymn singing and the reading of Scripture to ward off the enemies attempts to lead him into sin.

Our Bible lesson for today reveals that the Lord did something similar. Each time the devil tried to lead Him into sin, Jesus responded with an initial, “It is written...”

Do you see the importance of knowing what is in the Bible? Would you be able to counter the lies of the enemy or his henchmen, whenever he tempts you  to “obey man rather than God?”

● Continue hearing God’s Word in church.
● Open your Bible at home too, and increase the number of biblical weapons in your arsenal!
● And thank God that Jesus perfectly resisted Satan’s temptation, making Christ’s death and resurrection Your way out of sin and damnation!

Lord Jesus, thank You for showing me how to resist temptation by using Scripture. Yes, thank You that it is written that Your blood cleanses me from all sin. Amen.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105 ), is the theme for this three-year journey through the entire Old Testament once (the Psalms - twice yearly), and the New Testament twice. There will be daily readings from the O.T., Psalms and the N.T. Special days on the church calendar will be highlighted with appropriate readings. This calendar has been compiled by representatives of the Lutheran Church of Canada, the North American Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod. Please click this link for the daily reading calendar:
