December 5, 2018 - BLUEPRINTS FOR LIFE

Day 339 - (Today’s Bible readings: Joshua 19:1-31; Psalm 127; Acts 5:17-42)

Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. (Psalm 127 ESV)

Before one shovel goes into the ground in preparation for the foundation, before a stick of wood is purchased for the framing, before even the building permit is sought, a blueprint must be drawn up when planning to build a new house.

The same is true for our lives. Here in Psalm 127, our loving and wise heavenly Father gives us a blueprint for life via the “pen” of Solomon (considered Israel’s master builder).

Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. (v 1a) These words are pretty clear. Without the guidance and expertise of the divine Architect of the universe, all of our efforts to put our lives together are useless and even foolish. It makes sense, does it not? The One who created life in the first place certainly should know how best to live life!

Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. (v 1b) Who is watching over your life? Are you trusting in the Lord for protection from the folly that we see ruining so many lives around us?

It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep. (v. 2) Boy do these words hit home. The Lord is telling us to trust Him and not attempt to fill our lives with anxious toil. Are you enjoying God’s gift of adequate sleep that comes from submissively trusting in Him?

In the rest of Scripture we find many more details of God’s blueprints for your life, the chief of which is Jesus’ urgent plea to “repent and believe in the Gospel.” (Mark 1:15)

Almighty God, help me to always remember that You are the architect of my life. May Your Holy Spirit lead me to build my life on You as I meditate on Your blueprints for my life revealed in Your Holy Word. Above all, lead me to live a life of repentance and faith. In Jesus’ saving and guiding name. Amen.
