Tuesday, January 9, 2024 - WHY ARE YOU AFRAID?

"I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen." (Luther's Morning Prayer)
Tuesday, January 9, 2024 - Day 9 (Through the Bible in a year readings for today: Genesis 23,24 Matthew 8)

WHY ARE YOU AFRAID?

23 And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. 24 And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. 25 And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” 26 And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.  (Matthew 8:23-26 ESV)

Yes, why are you afraid? You may be able to come up with a pretty good list of reasons. But the truth is, a child of God need not fear. God has things under control. Our lives are in His almighty hands. Heaven is guaranteed to believers in Christ.

Are you afraid? Remember your Baptism. And also remember God’s perfect antidote to fear every time you hear His words, “Your sins are forgiven.”

Have no fear, little flock;
Have no fear little flock,
For the Father has chosen
To give you the Kingdom;
Have no fear, little flock!
(Have No Fear, Little Flock, Lutheran Service Book, CPH 2006, #735)

Lord Jesus, help me not to be afraid no matter what the storms of life may bring. Remind me of Your perfect timing in my life, beginning with my Baptism. Please keep me close to You today and forever. In Jesus’ saving name. Amen.
