Sunday, June 2, 2024 - LOVE ON ANOTHER

"I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen." (Luther's Morning Prayer)

Sunday, June 2, 2024 - Day 154 (Through the Bible in a year readings for today: 2 Chron. 10-12; John 13:18-38 )

LOVE ON ANOTHER

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34-35 ESV)

Jesus is calling us to follow His example of sacrificial love. “Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” Jesus put others first by leaving heaven and coming down to earth so that He could die for us. How different would your life be if you practiced that kind of love? How different would the lives of others around you be different if you put their needs ahead of your own?

St. Paul clearly stated God’s demand that we husbands show this kind of love to our wives: “Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” (Ephesians 5:25 ESV) How are doing, guys?

It’s in the love that Jesus has for sinners like you and me that we find our motivation and example for loving others.

1. Lord, whose love in humble service
    Bore the weight of human need,
    Who upon the cross, forsaken,
    Worked Your mercy’s perfect deed:
    We, Your servants, bring the worship
    Not of voice alone, but heart;
    Consecrating to Your purpose
    Ev’ry gift which You impart.

2. Still Your children wander homeless;
    Still the hungry cry for bread;
    Still the captives long for freedom;
    Still in grief we mourn our dead.
    As you, Lord, in deep compassion
    Healed the sick and freed the soul,
    by your Spirit send Your power
    To our world to make it whole.

3. As we worship, grant us vision,
    Till your love’s revealing light
    In its height and depth and greatness
    Dawns upon our quickened sight,
    Making known the needs and burdens
    Your compassion bids us bear,
    Stirring us to ardent service,
    Your abundant life to share.

4. Called by worship to Your service
    Forth in Your dear name we go,
    To the child, the youth, the aged,
    Love in living deeds to show;
    Hope and health, goodwill and comfort,
    Counsel, aid, and peace we give,
    That Your servants, Lord in freedom
    May Your mercy know and live.
    (“Lord, Whose Love through Humble Service,” Lutheran Service Book,#848)

Lord Jesus, thank You for loving me so much that You suffered and died in payment for my sins. Please help me to practice Your kind of sacrificial love with those around me by putting their needs ahead of my own.  And as ever, THY WILL BE DONE. Amen.

“See” you at the Communion rail this morning!
