Monday, May 20, 2024 - GO AND SIN NO MORE

"I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen." (Luther's Morning Prayer)

Monday, May 20, 2024 - Day 141 (Through the Bible in a year readings for today: I Chron. 3-5 John 8:1-20)

GO AND SIN NO MORE

The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.” (John 8:1-11 ESV)

“Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” While our attention is often drawn to this part of the scene, it is the words Jesus speaks to the woman that I wish to focus on today.

And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”

This is the message we hear in worship as our sins are forgiven. He calls us to also “go, and from now on sin no more.” Yes, the Lord is calling us to... “bear fruits in keeping with repentance.” (Luke 3:8 ESV)

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for forgiving my sins. Please grant me the wisdom and the strength to bear the fruit of repentance You require. And as usual, THY WILL BE DONE. Amen.
