Day 205 - Luke Sunday (chapters 21-22)
“But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap. For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.” (Luke 21:34-36 ESV)
It is so very easy to get sidetracked, to lose oneself in the distractions and cares of every day life. The Lord tells to pray for alertness and spiritual strength for the days that are to come. The hymn writer put it this way:
"Wake, awake, for night is flying,"
The watchmen on the heights are crying;
"Awake, Jerusalem, arise!"
Midnight hears the welcome voices
And at the thrilling cry rejoices;
"Oh, where are ye, ye virgins wise?
The Bridegroom comes, awake!
Your lamps with gladness take! Allelujah!
With bridal care Yourselves prepare
To meet the Bridegroom, who is near.".
(Lutheran Service Book, #516 stanza 1)
Lord Jesus, please keep me spiritually alert and ready for Your return. Amen.
