January 22, 2019 - LORD HAVE MERCY

Day 22 - (Today’s Bible readings: Ruth 4:5-22; Psalm 20; Acts 22:30-23:11)

"Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."  (Proverbs 31:8-9 NIV)

It was 46 years ago today that the Supreme Court declared legalized abortion to be the law of the land. Since then, 60 million innocent little babies have lost their lives. LORD, HAVE MERCY!

The Lord has answered this prayer in part by allowing many of us to "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.”

January also marks the 26th anniversary of A Place of Refuge, where we have had the privilege of helping mothers in need choose life for their babies. What a joy to hold little ones in my arms who are here because God’s people cared enough to be there for their mothers!

Jesus gave us this precious example to follow: And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God.” ... And he took them in his arms and blessed them. (Mark 10:12-14, 16 ESV)

Lord, have mercy, and change the hearts of those who would end the lives of innocent babies in the womb. Also change the hearts of those for whom the last 46 years have left them apathetic to the needs of mothers facing difficult choices. Move us all to support and encourage them with Your love and mercy. Amen.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105 ), is the theme for this three-year journey through the entire Old Testament once (the Psalms - twice yearly), and the New Testament twice. There will be daily readings from the O.T., Psalms and the N.T. Special days on the church calendar will be highlighted with appropriate readings. This calendar has been compiled by representatives of the Lutheran Church of Canada, the North American Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod.
