March 3, 2019 - THE TRANSFIGURATION

Day 62 - (Today’s Bible readings: Deuteronomy 34:1-12; Psalm 99; Hebrews 3:1-6; Luke 9:28-36)

“Now about eight days after these sayings he took with him Peter and John and James and went up on the mountain to pray. And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became dazzling white. And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they became fully awake they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him.”  (Luke 9:28-32 ESV)

On the church calendar today is the day we commemorate the Transfiguration of our Lord.

Jesus was transfigured to display His divine glory while at the same time getting His  disciples ready for His death and resurrection. When Jesus left heaven and became a man He lost none of His divine glory and majesty.

Peter, James and John were granted the blessing of viewing Christ’s glory on the mountain and in His miracles and preaching. While we will most likely not have the mountain top experience they did, we do get to bask in His glory every time we receive His body and blood in Holy Communion, and every time we hear His glorious Gospel.

'Tis good, Lord, to be here!
Yet we may not remain;
But since Thou bidst us leave the mount,
Come with us to the plain. Amen.

“See” you at the Communion table this morning.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105 ), is the theme for this three-year journey through the entire Old Testament once (the Psalms - twice yearly), and the New Testament twice. There will be daily readings from the O.T., Psalms and the N.T. Special days on the church calendar will be highlighted with appropriate readings. This calendar has been compiled by representatives of the Lutheran Church of Canada, the North American Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod.
