April 12, 2019 - THE ANCHOR OF YOUR SOUL

Day 102 - (Today’s Bible readings: Proverbs 1:20-33; Psalm 97; Hebrews 6:9-20)

“We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.” (Hebrews 6:19-20 ESV) 

The writer of Hebrews continues the high priest theme in chapter 8. He reminds us that since Jesus, our high priest, was the last and fulfilling sacrifice, we have the hope of forgiveness and heaven.

The reference to “a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul,” shows us that this hope is not the kind of hope we have for our favorite baseball team to win. Instead, the hope that anchors our souls is a sure confidence in Jesus and the blessings He showers upon all who repent and believe in Him, namely, “the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the  body and the life everlasting.” (The conclusion of The Apostles’ Creed)

   We have an anchor that keeps the soul
   Steadfast and sure while the billows roll,
   Fastened to the Rock which cannot move,
   Grounded firm and deep in the Savior’s love.

Heavenly Father, thank You the gift of Jesus, the anchor for my soul. Please keep me anchored in Him for the rest of my life so that I may spend eternity in the safe harbor of heaven.  In Jesus’ saving name. Amen.
