Friday, November 10, 2023 - EYE WITNESSES

"I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen." (Luther's Morning Prayer)

Friday, November 10, 2023 - Day 314  - (Today’s Bible readings: Daniel 4:19-37; Psalm 119:33-40; 2 Peter 1:16-21)

EYE WITNESSES

“For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.” (2 Peter 1:16 ESV)

Peter is referring to the fact that what he and the other apostles recorded about the life, death and resurrection of Jesus were facts. This means that Christianity is not the product of man’s imagination, not merely a series of myths. They were reporting what they saw with their own eyes.

While we are not eye witnesses of Jesus’ 33 years on this earth, we are “faith witnesses” of the truths of Christianity. We see Jesus clearly through eyes of faith.

There is a time when we are in the physical presence of Jesus. When you kneel at the Communion table, you are receiving the true body and blood of the Savior given and shed for you.

1. Here, O my Lord, I see Thee face to face;
    Here would I touch and handle things unseen;
    Here grasp with firmer hand the eternal grace,
    And all my weariness upon Thee lean.

2. Here would I feed upon the bread of God,
    Here drink with Thee the royal wine of heaven;
    Here would I lay aside each earthly load,
    Here taste afresh the calm of sin forgiven.
    (“Here, O My Lord, I See Thee Face to Face,” Lutheran Service Book 631)

Heavenly Father, thank You for opening my eyes to see Jesus as my Savior and Lord. Remind me of His presence in my daily life, especially when I am faced with challenges and difficulties. In Jesus’ saving name. Amen.

Pastor David Paape
