Day 263 - Numbers Monday (chapters 21-24)
7 And the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you. Pray to the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.8 And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.”9 So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live. (Numbers 21:7-9 ESV)
God’s people did what we still do today. They complained about the way God was taking care of them. This displeased God. He sent serpents to bring them to their senses. Seeing the punishment of death slithering around them, they confessed their sin and cried for mercy.
God’s answer was to have them trust Him enough to simply look at a bronze serpent, and they would survive the snake bites.
What about the snake bites we are subject to? God is just as displeased with you and me when we rebel against Him and complain about His care. Is there a way out for us? Listen to Jesus’ answer:
“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.” (John 3:14 ESV)
Heavenly Father, I have rebelled against You in thought, word and deed. I confess my sin and seek Your mercy. Thank You for answering my pleas by sending Jesus to the cross to pay for my sins. Yes, thank You for forgiving my sins for Jesus’ sake. Amen.
Look to Christ and live!
