December 8, 2016 - Rose of Sharon

Day 343 - Song of Solomon Thursday (chapters 1-2)

“I am a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys.” (Song of Solomon 2:1 ESV)

Rose of Sharon is used as an image of the Virgin Mary who gave birth to God’s Son. Our Christmas hymn, “Lo How a Rose E'er Blooming,” refers to the Rose of Sharon as Christ Himself.      LSB 359

1 Lo, how a rose e'er blooming From tender stem hath sprung!
Of Jesse's lineage coming As prophets long have sung,
It came a flow'ret bright, Amid the cold of winter,
When half-spent was the night.

2 Isaiah 'twas foretold it, The rose I have in mind;
With Mary we behold it, The virgin mother kind.
To show God's love aright, She bore to us a Savior,
When half-spent was the night.

3      This flow'r, whose fragrance tender With sweetness fills the air,
Dispels with glorious splendor The darkness ev'rywhere.
True man, yet very God, From sin and death he saves us
And lightens ev'ry load.

4 O Savior, child of Mary, Who felt our human woe;
O Savior, King of glory, Who dost our weakness know:
Bring us at length we pray To the bright courts of heaven,
And to the endless day.
.
Dearest Lord Jesus, thank You for coming to earth that first Christmas to dispel the darkness of my sin. Keep my faith in You so that You may bring me at length to the gates of heaven. Amen.
