June 16, 2016 - LOOKING STRAIGHT AHEAD

Day 168 - Proverbs Thursday (4)

“Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you... Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.” (Proverbs 4:25&27  ESV)

When I was a boy growing up in Milwaukee there was a sound that got us kids all running toward it. The rag man would call out, “Rags, rags, rags.” Those words meant that we would get to see his horse. The main thing I remembered about his one-horse-powered rig was the blinders that kept the “engine” going in the right direction.

In the 4th chapter of Proverbs Solomon is giving advice for continuing in the right spiritual direction. “Focus on God and the things of God. It is not enough to have wisdom begun, it must be sustained.” (The Lutheran Study Bible, Concordia Publishing House, 2009, page 1006)

The writer to the Hebrews sharpens our focus by telling us to put the “Jesus blinders” on.

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:2 NIV)

Gracious heavenly Father, please keep my eyes focused on Jesus with the blinders of Your Word and Sacraments. Amen.

Keep your eyes on Jesus today!
