June 26, 2016 - I’M NUMBER THREE

Day 178 - Philippians Sunday (1-2)

“Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interest of others.” (Philippians 2:3-4 ESV)

“It’s hard to be humble when you’re perfect in every way.” So says Mac Davis. Not so says St. Paul. Instead a lack of conceit and the presence of humility are to be the mark of a Christian.

St. Peter agrees: “Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (1 Peter 5:5 ESV)

It sounds like God is pretty serious about His people living humble lives!

“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”  (Philippians 2:5-8 ESV)

It is not that hard to be humble when you remember that Jesus died for that “poor, miserable sinner” we each see in the mirror every morning!

Lord Jesus, thank You for humbling Yourself by going to the cross for me. May I humbly spend the rest of my life living for You and putting You and others ahead of myself. Amen.

“See” you at the Communion table this morning.

Pastor David Paape
